| Преодолев безмолвные топи, балансируя по ветвям поваленных деревьев и ступая вброд по изведанным тропам, оказываешься на переходном болоте, носящем название Ветхая Песнь.
Всюду, куда не глянь, буйствуют краски природы. Громады поросших дебрями кочек у самой воды, отражение в ней клюквы, гонобобеля, воронца и брусники. Кукушкин лен напоминает молоденькие елочки, показавшиеся из почвы, а дикран, поблескивая от редких солнечных лучей, переливается от зелено-буроватого до темно-зеленого оттенками. Рыхлый моховой ковер до того усыпан ягодами, что местами стал голубого и красного цветов. Ступая по такому ковру, сразу ощущаешь топкую мягкость под лапами. Никогда не стоит забывать в этом месте, что сфагнум появляется тогда, когда вода умирает и рождается суша, а, значит, болото полно ловушек, незримых глазу. Случается, разорвется что-то меж подушками мха, лапа зацепится, будто кто-то крепко схватил ее, ведь там, внизу, под этим верхним, осыпанным ягодами дерном, бывает, иногда, веками гниющий в черной воде лес. Объятия моховой пустыни с сильнейшим одуряющим запахом багульника, зловонным ароматом дурмана и смрадным благоуханием клопогона, буквально не дают нормально дышать. Кривая ольха, нетвердо стоявшая на маленьком моховом островке, давала ощущение зыбкости, ведь она может сразу исчезнуть, как и все здесь. Клюквенная тропа, пронизывающая Болото Ветхой Песни, испещрена оголившимися корнями деревьев, затрудняющими ходьбу. Но, несмотря на все трудности и неудобства, это место приютило под своим зеленым крылом множество живых существ. Вон там, в тростнике, где слышится глухое токование, притаилась буровато-рыжая длинноногая птица бекас. А в тех кочках, укрытых зарослями лозняка, гнездится капризный дупель, чей окрас черно-бурый, пронизанный охристо-желтоватыми полосами и пятнами. Слышите это слабое шуршание? Оно идет прямо из-за поваленной сосны. Это заяц, забредший на кормежку. А что же это за страшный звук раздается в вечерней тиши? Глухой рев, пробирающий до самых костей. Звук идет со стороны шуршащих стрелок камышей, но не спешите пугаться, ведь он принадлежит всего лишь птице, размером не превышающей тетерева, которая зовется выпью. Внезапно, сверху раздается сильный присвистывающий звук, который издало что-то темное, промелькнувшее быстро, что нельзя разглядеть. Это оказался лишь клин журавлиной стаи, идущий на посадку, после долгой дороги домой. Вглядываясь в изгибы деревьев, можно приметить большой бурый нарост, который внезапно посмотрит на вас двумя огромными желтыми глазами, а затем издаст гулких хохот, который волной пройдется по болотной глуши. Это все потехи ночного охотника-филина. А в поросшем озерке раздаются всплески и журчание. Не стоит идти туда, ведь, наверняка, в мутной воде резвится выдра, которую природа подготовила к обитанию в водной стихии. Выдры-сильные животные, которых стоит опасаться, если охотишься в одиночку.
Жизнь здесь кипит и идет своим чередом, и ничто не нарушит этой идиллии, пока болото само этого не захочет. Болото Ветхой Песни подарило котам клана Сломленного Древа чудесные угодья для охоты и тренировки молодняка.
